There is an opinion that active acoustics is used basically by professionals. You can find active speakers not only in expensive acoustic systems but in computer speakers also.

The first one is when the signal is amplified by means of audio amplifier and the second one is when the signal is amplified by the acoustic system itself, which has in its speakers built-in amplifier. The second variant is used in cheap computer speakers, or in very expensive studio monitors or professional technics. There is a very little chance that you will meet them in some home theatre. Also it should be mentioned that both types have own advantages and disadvantages.
First of all the advantages of active acoustic system are specified by the drawbacks of the passive acoustic systems. If you decided to buy passive acoustic system you should know that it could take a lot of time to select all the components for it. You should find such components with which your acoustic system would sound in the best way. It is not an easy task. The matter is that the producers of amplifiers don’t know which acoustics these amplifiers will be used for.
